For instance, different styles of block printing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.in\/content\/history-of-block-prints-indian-textiles-designers-using-ajrakh-dabu-prints\">different regions of India<\/a> describe their diverse communities and environments, while textiles weaved by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartwalkfoundation.org\/weaving-as-language\/\">the Q\u2019ero people<\/a> of Peru chronicle their rich cultural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sarawak, the designs found on the <em>pua kumbu<\/em> depict tales deriving from traditional beliefs and rituals as well as folklores of the Iban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, according to anthropologist <a href=\"https:\/\/umexpert.um.edu.my\/welynejj\">Dr. Welyne Jeffrey Jehom<\/a> from Universiti Malaya, each of these textiles, which utilises the tie-dye (<em>ikat<\/em> in Malay; <em>kebat<\/em> in Iban) method, has its own ubiquitous identity through the stories reflected in the intricate colours and patterns produced by the weaver.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"324\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RO-5-3-1-081-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RO-5-3-1-081-2022.jpg 324w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RO-5-3-1-081-2022-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RO-5-3-1-081-2022-150x188.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/RO-5-3-1-081-2022-300x375.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><figcaption>Each pua kumbu has its own designs depicting stories related to Iban myths and legends. Screenshot from the presentation &#8216;Traditional Textiles and Costumes&#8217; by Dr. Welyne Jeffrey Jehom<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In her presentation \u2018Traditional Textiles and Costumes\u2019 as part of Spotlight on Sarawak \u2013 a series of talks organised by the Heritage of Malaysia Trust between April and July 2022 \u2013 Dr. Welyne showcases a few <em>pua kumbu<\/em> pieces from her years of field work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designs of this \u201cdream weaving\u201d, as the art is known for, are usually based on motifs found in nature, including birds, snakes, frogs, flowers and fruits. The underlying belief behind the animistic designs has also been lost,\u201d Dr. Welyne laments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, there have been research and documentation on the traditional textile locally and globally to ensure its longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Dr. Welyne, with its close connection with Iban oral literature, she believes that <em>pua kumbu<\/em> serves as a tool and platform for weavers to narrate their story \u2013 what they see, hear, imagine and dream about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo when contextualising and legitimising <em>pua kumbu<\/em>, the factors to consider include the purpose for which it was woven, its date and historical context, the life story of the weaver herself, as well as being aware of the rich repertoire of references to Iban legend, religion and oral history that suggest that the role of the <em>pua kumbu<\/em> has traditionally played within the Iban society, which is evident in the myth that form the basis of their social and religious lives,\u201d she surmises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is <em>Pua Kumbu<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A warp-patterned, ceremonial blanket, cloth or textile woven by Iban women on a back-strap loom.
