Photo from MyAgeing, UPM official website<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As it sets to tackle ageing issues in Sarawak, her ministry has <a href=\"https:\/\/myageing.upm.edu.my\/news\/majlis_menandatangani_memorandum_persefahaman_antara_upm_dan_kpwk_sarawak-65932\">established<\/a> a close bilateral collaboration with MyAgeing&#x2122; on research, development, commercialisation and innovation related to ageing and the elderly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most crucially, beginning 2023, it will conduct a study titled \u2018Research on Preparation for An Ageing Nation: The Profile of and Ageing Issues Affecting the Elderly in Sarawak\u2019 that aims:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To map the profile of the elderly in Sarawak, i.e. geographical distribution, as well as socio-economic, living arrangements and health profile;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To identify ageing issues and challenges;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of existing interventions and programmes; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To recommend strategies and action plans to address ageing issues in Sarawak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"339\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022.jpg 339w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022-150x212.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022-300x425.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-7-1-093-2022-297x420.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Infographic by Department of Statistics, Malaysia<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It will involve three universities that will gather data across the southern, central and northern regions of the State: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, University of Technology Sarawak and Curtin University Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research as a whole is expected to encompass various aspects concerning the ageing society \u2013 for example, financial security or social protection; household expenditure; health and well-being; housing and transport; lifelong learning; family care and support; and intergenerational relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-8-1-093-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-8-1-093-2022.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-8-1-093-2022-150x300.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RO-5-8-1-093-2022-210x420.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe outcome of the study will see the recommendation of targeted, evidence-based, effective and sustainable intervention and programmes to address ageing issues, including healthy, active, productive and positive ageing, affecting the elderly people in Sarawak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will also include comprehensive recommendations for an elderly policy for Sarawak and a systematic and structured Ageing Nation Action Plan 2023-2030 for Sarawak covering short, medium and long-term plans,\u201d explained Dato Sri Fatimah in a September 2022 press conference, as quoted by The Borneo Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ongoing Welfare Services for the Elderly in Sarawak<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the DUN sitting in November 2022, Dato Sri Fatimah also provided updates on initiatives implemented by her ministry that aligned with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpwkm.gov.my\/kpwkm\/uploads\/files\/Dokumen\/Dasar\/Dasar%20Warga%20Emas_2011.pdf\"><em>Dasar Warga Emas Negara<\/em> (DWEN)<\/a> in supporting healthy, positive and active ageing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) and <\/em><\/strong><strong>Bantuan Ihsan Kematian<em> (BIK)<\/em><\/strong><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its introduction in 2020 (and as of October 2022), 218,935 elderly people have applied successfully to become <a href=\"https:\/\/kenyalanggold.com\/\">Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC)<\/a> holders.
