{"id":22589,"date":"2023-10-12T00:14:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T16:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/?p=22589"},"modified":"2023-10-12T07:22:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-11T23:22:45","slug":"bolstering-the-protection-of-sebuyaus-coastline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/2023\/10\/12\/bolstering-the-protection-of-sebuyaus-coastline\/","title":{"rendered":"Bolstering the Protection of Sebuyau\u2019s Coastline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Since its elevation from sub-district to full district at the end of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/samarahan.sarawak.gov.my\/web\/subpage\/webpage_view\/349\/simunjando\">Sebuyau<\/a> is in the midst of becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theborneopost.com\/2023\/08\/18\/new-township-set-to-propel-sebuyau-towards-becoming-coastal-commercial-hub\/\">a coastal commercial hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among many other initiatives, plans are underway to revitalise the local agriculture sector with large-scale coconut and pineapple plantations, while a new township is currently being developed in the coastal district of Samarahan Division \u2013 all to boost the local population\u2019s socio-economic well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before such aspiration can be realised, however, there is the urgency to protect Sebuyau from frequent flooding and coastal erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located along the banks of Batang Sadong and Batang Lupar, as well as the coast facing the South China Sea, it is susceptible to different forms of floods, particularly:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/RS-5-02-1-063-2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/RS-5-02-1-063-2023.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/RS-5-02-1-063-2023-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/RS-5-02-1-063-2023-150x90.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/RS-5-02-1-063-2023-600x359.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sebuyau District is located along the banks of two rivers and faces the South China Sea, making it susceptible to floods and coastal erosion. Photo by HornBill-i UAV from Sebuyau Facebook page <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In Sebuyau District, the Sebangan-Bajong Drainage Scheme stretches from areas of Sebangan to Sebuyau Town, and is surrounded by embankments that before were capable of preventing saline seawater from entering agricultural land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, these embankments as well as the drainage and irrigation systems were worn away as decades went by, exposing the land to high tide and floods. Photos courtesy of Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak, Samarahan Division Office<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Yet Ir Irwandee stresses that all these possibilities can only be achieved if regular maintenance is implemented on all flood mitigation, embankments, drainage systems and other drainage and irrigation infrastructure in Sebuyau District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, any form of development in the future cannot exacerbate the district\u2019s vulnerability to floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is where DID Sarawak\u2019s main roles come in.
