{"id":9609,"date":"2020-07-03T10:47:49","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T02:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/faradalemedia.com\/?p=2056"},"modified":"2020-07-03T10:47:49","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T02:47:49","slug":"health-and-organisational-productivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/2020\/07\/03\/health-and-organisational-productivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Health and Organisational Productivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/faradalemedia.com\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/art-247-01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2057\" src=\"http:\/\/faradalemedia.com\/v2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/art-247-01-640x480.jpg\" alt=\"high angle view of a team of asian and caucasian corporate executives discussing business in meeting room.\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the link between employee health and productivity becoming more widely-recognized, health and wellness is now consider as a critical business performance strategy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over\u00a0 the\u00a0 last\u00a0 decades,\u00a0 accelerating\u00a0 technological\u00a0 changes\u00a0 and\u00a0 new\u00a0 forms\u00a0 of\u00a0 workplace\u00a0 organisation\u00a0 have\u00a0 led to workers assuming increased responsibilities and more autonomy than ever before (Appelbaum et al., 2000).\u00a0 Although\u00a0 this\u00a0 has\u00a0 increased\u00a0 overall\u00a0 productivity,\u00a0 flexible\u00a0 modern\u00a0 working\u00a0 practices\u00a0 have\u00a0 also\u00a0 increased\u00a0 daily\u00a0 job\u00a0 demands,\u00a0 requiring\u00a0 employees\u00a0 to\u00a0 multi-task\u00a0 and\u00a0 leading\u00a0 to\u00a0 increased\u00a0 levels\u00a0 of\u00a0 workplace\u00a0 stress\u00a0 and\u00a0 unrealistic\u00a0 time\u00a0 pressures\u00a0 (Bevan,\u00a0 2012).\u00a0 These\u00a0 developments\u00a0 have\u00a0 not\u00a0 only\u00a0 led\u00a0 to\u00a0 increasing\u00a0 levels\u00a0 of\u00a0 sickness\u00a0 absence\u00a0 but\u00a0 also\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 emergence\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 phenomenon\u00a0 called\u00a0 \u2018presenteeism\u2019,\u00a0 when\u00a0 employees\u00a0 attend\u00a0 work\u00a0 while\u00a0 in\u00a0 sub-optimal\u00a0 health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Malaysia\u2019s Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality 2018 survey findings reveal that absence and presenteeism continue to affect organisation\u2019s bottom line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Malaysia\u2019s Healthiest Workplace survey is an independent survey commissioned by AIA and delivered in partnership with research agency RAND Europe, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as the study\u2019s local academic advisor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">117 organisations of different sizes and sectors participated in the survey, representing a combined workforce of 11,551 employees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The finding shows that organisations lose a total of 73.1 days per employee due to absence and presenteeism, costing each employer RM2.27 million per year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mental health issues are on the rise with 50.2% of employees having at least one dimension of work-related stress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other key findings for Malaysia\u2019s Healthiest Workplace by AIA Vitality 2018 survey are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>45.9% of employees are at risk with their physical activities falling below 150 minutes per week.<\/li>\n<li>16.6% of employees are obese.<\/li>\n<li>85% of employees are reported to have one or more musculoskeletal conditions.<\/li>\n<li>91.7% of employees surveyed do not have a balanced diet.<\/li>\n<li>54.4% of Malaysians get less than seven (7) hours of sleep per night, whereas 11% said that they have poor sleep followed by 2% having very poor sleep.<\/li>\n<li>32% of employees are reported to have one or more chronic diseases (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, or stroke).<\/li>\n<li>56% of employees feel that their line managers care about their health and wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>90% of employers\/organisations offer at least one intervention \u2013 only 13% of employees are aware of any intervention offered by their employers and for those who are aware, 59% participate in at least one intervention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Indeed, wellness programs, independent of efficacy, have been shown to increase job satisfaction (Zoller2004) and raise perceptions of organizational commitment towards employees (Parks andSteelman2008).
