However, this positive effect can be negated by an unhealthy work environment, especially when it affects an individual\u2019s mental and emotional well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental health problems due to an unhealthy workplace are related to interactions between the type of work carried out by employees; organisational and managerial environment; employees\u2019 skills and competencies; and support that is available for employees to perform their job tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, these problems can be the result of risk factors including inadequate health, safety and well-being policies; poor communication and management practices; limited participation in decision-making or low control over an employee\u2019s area of work; low levels of support for employees; inflexible working hours; and unclear tasks or organisational objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health risks from an unhealthy workplace can also be connected to an employee\u2019s job scope. This could be a mismatch between tasks and competencies; constant inflow of work assignments; or high levels of personal risk, as confronted by the likes of first responders and humanitarian workers. In some cases, these risks can be exacerbated by a lack of group cohesiveness or social support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of experiencing stress in such a negative work environment, some employees end up being bullied and\/or psychologically harassed, thus making themselves susceptible to physical and mental health problems, absenteeism, lost productivity and harmful use of alcohol and substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not only detrimental to their own mental and emotional well-being, but also their relationship with their family and community, as well as their employers\u2019 overall performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, it is vital for organisations to create a healthy workplace that involves employees at every level and even major stakeholders to ensure that mental health protection, promotion and support interventions are provided and monitored for their effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rakansarawak.com\/v4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/art-703-01.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>A negative work environment can increase an employee&#8217;s risk of having mental health problems<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations can achieve this by carrying out a number of interventions and good practices that protect and promote mental and emotional well-being in the workplace.
