Residents in the district of Samarahan
\nwill now have access to a modernised library thanks to the completion of the Samarahan
\nDistrict Council Public Library\u2019s new building that was made open to the public
\nin November 2006. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Prior to this, the library was housed in
\nthe district council\u2019s building. Undoubtedly, such cramped quarters proved to
\nbe inadequate for storing books not to mention creating an uncomfortable
\nreading space for its members.
<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

Thus, the district council made a proposal to
\nthe state government for funds to build an entirely new building for the
\npurpose of constructing a library that would be able to cater towards Kota
\nSamarahan\u2019s growing population, as reflected by the increasing number of
\nresidential housing estates within the area. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Also, the establishment of higher educational institutions in Kota
\nSamarahan such as the UiTM and UNIMAS campuses had inadvertently created an
\ninflux of university students whom would need a resource centre for reference
\nbooks and materials that were not necessarily readily available at these
\ninstitutions. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The proposal was then approved and carried out as an 8th<\/sup>
\nMalaysia Plan (8MP) project, with construction beginning in November 2004. It
\nwas successfully completed in April 2006, amounting to a total cost of RM 2.67
\nmillion and handed over to the district council later that year in September. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

At present, the new library building is considered to be a key
\ncomponent in terms of strengthening Kota Samarahan\u2019s image as a \u2018Town of
\nKnowledge\u2019 in Sarawak. Not only does it have the capability to encourage the
\nlocal community to become knowledgeable and well informed, but it will also highlight
\nthe importance of reading amongst people of a broad age spectrum.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The
\nlibrary\u2019s new facilities include people-friendly reading areas, an \u2018InfoTech\u2019
\narea for children and computers for accessing the library\u2019s catalogue. As for
\nthe library\u2019s book collection, the new building\u2019s spaciousness has enabled the
\nstaff to easily catalogue and shelve the books, which range from both local and
\nforeign books, magazines, journals and various reference materials.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Let us hope that the new library will continue to be steadfast in
\nline with the district council\u2019s plan to popularise reading amongst the people
\nof Samarahan.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n
