Gedong, a picturesque region within the Samarahan Division of Sarawak, has been elevated to a full district in a significant stride towards local governance and development. This milestone was announced by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Gedong District Council members on Monday, 4th March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Establishing the Gedong District Council is pivotal in the area\u2019s history. 31 dedicated members, led by Chairman Tamida Da\u2019adi and Deputy Chairman Japar Mustapha, took their oath of office from January 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Deputy Premier Dr Sim emphasised the importance of this move, stating, \u201cThe existence of Gedong District Council will empower the planning and implementation of development activities in the Gedong area as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the inclusion of the Gedong District Council, the total count of local councils in Sarawak reaches 27 alongside the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), aligning with the government\u2019s commitment to grassroots governance. Deputy Premier Dr Sim urged the newly appointed councillors to collaborate effectively, ensuring the delivery of municipal services and efficient governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his insightful speech, Dr Sim highlighted the historical significance of local government institutions, tracing their roots through colonialism, independence struggles, and the pursuit of self-governance. He emphasised these institutions\u2019 crucial role in education, public health, and environmental conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cOver the decades, our local government institutions have evolved and matured, adapting to the changing needs and aspirations of our people,\u201d remarked Dr. Sim. \u201cIn the face of mounting ecological challenges, our councils have stepped up to protect our natural heritage, implementing policies and initiatives aimed at preserving our planet for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Sim, who also serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, underlined the relevance of local councils in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. He called for active participation from the Gedong District Council in localising SDGs and contributing to a sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The swearing-in ceremony, attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, marked a commitment to democratic principles, accountability, and community service. The new councillors took the Corruption Free Pledge, underscoring their dedication to ethical governance.<\/p>\n\n\n

As Gedong progresses, plans for a dedicated district council building are discussed. This development reflects the importance of providing essential facilities to local government branches. The proposed building will serve as a hub for councillors to discuss infrastructure and administration, expediting the district\u2019s development goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the significance of adapting to the new era with information technology for innovative district development. \u201cThe new members of MDG should make use of technologies available to communicate, for example, by creating their own group chat,\u201d he advised, emphasising the importance of technology for efficient problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n

In addition to infrastructure development, Gedong District Council aims to connect with the community through transparent communication. Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari urged councillors to act proactively in building social relations with people of multiple races, emphasising the councils\u2019 role in overall community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony also witnessed the Gedong District Council logo launch, symbolising the district\u2019s aspirations for development and community prosperity. Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and other key government officials were also present at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n

About Gedong District:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gedong, encompassing 55 villages across Pangkor Zone, Gedong Proper Zone, and Ulu Gedong Zone, officially became a full district on March 31, 2022. The proposed creation, initiated in 2020, saw approval in October 2021, and the district has since thrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for cuisine of fresh prawns and unique delicacy, ikan bauk, Gedong offers a quaint getaway for those seeking tranquillity from the noises of urban life. With a rich history as a centre for trade and administration, the district now leverages its river as a critical asset for the livelihood of locals in agriculture with aspirations for further infrastructural and digital development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
