In a vibrant show of solidarity and support for the deaf community of Sarawak, the recently concluded Sarawak Society for the Deaf (SSD) Charity Food Festival 2024 witnessed a remarkable display of generosity and compassion. The event, held at the Association of Churches Sarawak on April 7th<\/sup>, Sunday, was graced by the presence of Sarawak Deputy Premier YB Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who officiated the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bridging Gaps: Funding Essential Programs and Services<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim emphasised the crucial need for concerted efforts to ensure the inclusion and empowerment of the deaf community amidst ongoing development initiatives in Sarawak. There are around 3,000 deaf individuals in the state, of which around 10% are affiliated with SSD. For the deaf community, everyday tasks that many take for granted\u2014communicating, learning, and engaging with their surroundings\u2014can present formidable barriers. In a society driven by communication, the inability to hear often leads to social isolation and exclusion, hindering personal growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n

Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim, with his unwavering commitment to social equity and inclusion, has championed the cause of the deaf community, amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights. During the event, he emphasised the importance of providing holistic support to the deaf community, underscoring the significance of intervention programs and support systems offered by SSD. \u201cThey did not choose to be born deaf,\u201d he stated, \u201cso it is important for them to receive appropriate support through SSD, enabling them to live independently and contribute meaningfully to Sarawak\u2019s progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowering Initiatives: The SSD Charity Food Festival 2024<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SSD Charity Food Festival, held from 8 am to 12 pm, was a resounding success, with the participation of over 80 stalls operated by volunteers and private organisations. The event garnered immense support from the public, resulting in the raising of RM100,000, coupled with an additional RM50,000 donated by private entities and individuals. While the number represents only half of the original target of RM300,000, it nevertheless marks a significant milestone in supporting operational costs and various projects dedicated to enhancing the lives of the Sarawakian deaf community.<\/p>\n\n\n

Among the key projects and initiatives spearheaded by SSD are Malaysia Sign Language (BIM) classes, an early intervention community program to assist parents with deaf children, a video project tailored for the deaf community, and the enhancement of SSD\u2019s facilities. The funds raised during the charity event will contribute to the renovation of the SSD building, including establishing a video editing room and Malaysian Sign Language classroom, a new caf\u00e9, a deaf tuition centre, a mini-park, and support activities for deaf individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Champion of Advocacy: <\/strong>Datuk Amar Professor<\/strong> Dr. Sim and SSD’s Commitment to Awareness<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim commended SSD for its unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive services to Sarawak\u2019s deaf community. Over the past four decades, they consistently placed themselves at the forefront of efforts to harness innovation for the benefit of the deaf community. He expressed gratitude for their efforts in equipping individuals with the necessary skills to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of ongoing support and outreach programs, particularly in facilitating access to advanced technologies such as cochlear implant surgery for select children born deaf, as well as advancements in hearing aids.<\/p>\n\n\n

Notable figures attended the event, including Batu Lintang State Assembly Member See Chee How, SSD Chairman Albert Wong, and committee members from the Sarawak Deaf Association.
