In a significant boost to renal care services in northern Sarawak, Sarawak Energy Berhad, in partnership with the Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (SABATI), has donated a new haemodialysis machine to Hospital Miri.
The contribution is aimed at strengthening the hospital’s capacity to meet the surging demand for dialysis treatment and improving the quality of life for patients with kidney failure.
The machine was officially handed over in a ceremony held on 7 February 2026, as part of Sarawak Energy’s ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
This initiative falls under the company’s Community Investment focus area of Community Development and Entrepreneurship, which is dedicated to enhancing access to essential medical equipment and services at public healthcare facilities across the state.
The handover ceremony was officiated by The Honourable Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak’s Minister for Transport.
Representing Hospital Miri, the machine was received by its Director, Dr. Jack Wong Siew Yu. Also present to witness the event were Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan, Sarawak Energy’s Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, and Datin Hajah Siti Shorgayah Ahmad Zaidin, the Honorary Treasurer of SABATI.
The donation addresses a critical need in the region. Haemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease, requiring them to undergo sessions multiple times a week. With the prevalence of kidney-related diseases on the rise, public hospitals like Miri often face immense pressure to accommodate the growing number of patients, leading to long waiting lists and straining existing resources.
In her speech at the event, Hajah Siti Aisah Adenan emphasised the profound impact the new machine will have beyond the clinical setting.
“For patients undergoing dialysis, access to treatment is not just about medical equipment; it is about continuity, dignity, and quality of life,” she stated.
A reliable and accessible machine means a patient can adhere to their treatment schedule without undue stress or the burden of traveling long distances.
“Through this contribution and our collaboration with SABATI, we hope to ease the burden on both patients and healthcare providers, while ensuring essential services remain accessible to communities in Miri and the surrounding areas,” said Hajah Siti Aisah.
The new machine will be integrated into the hospital’s dialysis unit, allowing staff to serve more patients and reduce wait times, thereby ensuring that those in critical need receive timely and consistent care.
The donation to Hospital Miri is not an isolated act of charity but a key component of a much larger, statewide commitment to public health.
It was revealed at the ceremony that the machine for Miri is part of a substantial RM225,000 contribution from Sarawak Energy to SABATI specifically for the procurement of haemodialysis machines for hospitals across Sarawak.
This collaborative effort has been steadily expanding its reach. Following a successful donation to Lundu Hospital in 2025, the programme is set to continue its rollout.
Additional haemodialysis machines are scheduled for delivery to several other key hospitals later this year, including those in Mukah, Bintulu, and Sarikei.
This systematic approach ensures that the benefits of the programme are distributed equitably, reaching communities from the northern borders of the state to its central and southern regions.
The partnership between Sarawak Energy and SABATI in the healthcare sector is well-established, with a track record of addressing critical medical needs in the state’s most remote and underserved areas.
Their collaboration began in June 2020, during the height of the global health crisis, with the donation of haemodialysis machines to the hospitals in Kapit and Lawas.
These initial contributions were vital in ensuring that patients in the interior and far-flung northern regions did not have to undertake arduous journeys for their thrice-weekly treatments.
Since that initial effort, Sarawak Energy has significantly broadened its support for medical facilities across Sarawak.
Beyond dialysis machines, the company’s contributions have included a range of vital medical equipment such as ECG machines, ambulances to improve patient transport, and fundoscopy equipment for eye care.
Furthermore, recognising the importance of vision health, the company has also provided funding for life-changing cataract surgeries for communities in Kapit, the Mukah-Balingian area, Sungai Asap Belaga, Murum, and Sri Aman.
This latest donation to Hospital Miri underscores Sarawak Energy’s dedication to its role as a responsible corporate citizen.
The company’s social investment is strategically guided by four core Community Investment focus areas: Education and Young People; Environmental Management and Conservation; Culture and Heritage Preservation; and Community Development and Entrepreneurship.
The partnership with SABATI to provide dialysis machines falls squarely under the last pillar, directly contributing to community development by improving public health infrastructure.
By ensuring that essential medical services are more accessible, Sarawak Energy is helping to build healthier, more resilient communities, which in turn supports the state’s broader socio-economic development goals.
The handover ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Hospital Miri’s director, Dr. Jack Wong, who expressed his profound gratitude on behalf of the hospital management, staff, and most importantly, the patients.
He noted that the new machine is not just a piece of equipment, but a symbol of hope and a tangible commitment to the well-being of the people of Miri and the northern region by Sarawak Energy and SABATI.
