The government has identified 1,022 dilapidated schools in Sarawak which need repairs and upgrading.
In 2017, it was reported by the then Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research Sarawak that out of 1, 454 schools in Sarawak, 70.2 per cent or 1, 020 schools are categorised as dilapidated while 415 are categorised as critically dilapidated and required urgent action.
A RM1 billion sum was allocated by the government to repair and/or upgrade dilapidated schools.
As one of the high impact projects handled under the Public Works Department (JKR), Sibu Division, the Sibu Divisional Engineer, John Wong Toh Koo said that thedepartment is responsible for the repair and upgrade project for several schools in Sibu area under the 11th and 12th Malaysia Plan.
He added that among the impact of improving the school facilities in Sarawak is to help improve the education quality in Sarawak.
