About 120 participants from various departments, agencies, and non-governmental organisations participated in a two day ‘City of Unity’ workshop from December 11 to 12 held at the State Library.
Organised by DBKU in collaboration with Yayasan 1Malaysia, the workshop featured topics such as, population density, ethnic and cultural diversity, political stability, city administrative structure, employment opportunities, acceptance of mix marriages and social harmony.
Present to officiate the workshop on December 11 was the Sarawak Chief Minister said YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
In delivering his speech, the Sarawak Chief Minister said that the State has implemented several initiatives to sustain the status of Kuching city as the ‘City of Unity’.
Among the initiatives includes a Unity Park has been proposed to be built within the reservoir Park area.
“I hope that the Unity Park will reflect the unity of various races and religious belief in the city of Kuching,” said YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari.
Apart from that, he added that the State government will support efforts by Yayasan 1Malaysia in getting Unesco to recognise Kuching as a City of Unity.
Kuching was declared as the ‘City of Unity’ by the late Datuk patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem on August 1st 2015.
