Sarawak aims for 77 golds in SUKMA XIX

Sarawak is aiming high for the 19th SUKMA Games, as it hopes to bring home 77 golds and the championship.

Speaking to Sarawak athletes and officials during the flag handover ceremony to the Sarawak contingent on Saturday, 8 September 2018, Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg said that the athletes’ performance in the upcoming games would determine the State’s benchmark as to where it currently stands in terms of sports.

He also assured them that the State Government would continue its support for Sarawak sports development by improving current sports infrastructure and facilities, as well as sending potential athletes for overseas training.

With two years of preparation following the previous SUKMA in Sarawak – in which the State was second behind Selangor in the final medal tally – the Chief Minister thanked those involved for their hard work, and encouraged the athletes to make the State proud through their performance at the games.

With a contingent that consists of around 700 athletes and officials, Sarawak will take part in all 29 games featured in SUKMA XIX, which will be held in Perak from 11 to 22 September 2018.

They are aquatics; archery; athletics; badminton; basketball; bowling; boxing; cricket; cycling; football and futsal; golf; gymnastics; handball; hockey; judo; karate; muay; lawn ball; netball; pencak silat; petanque; rugby seven; sailing; sepak takraw; shooting; squash; taekwondo; weightlifting; and wushu.

The flag handover ceremony, which took place at a hotel in Kuching, saw the Chief Minister handing over the State flag to chef-de-mission YB Datuk Snowdan Lawan, who is also Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports.
