Sarawak Economy Expected to Grow at 4 Percent in 2017

In tandem with the growth of Malaysian economy and the slowdown in global economy, Sarawak economy is expected to grow at four percent this year, said Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.

In his speech read by Deputy Chief Minister III YB Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during the 4th Sarawak Business and Investment Summit at Hilton Hotel, Kuching on 9th October 2017, he added that due to the services and manufacturing sectors, the State nominal gross domestic product (GDP) has increased in 2016 at RM121.4 billion compared with 2015 at RM119.1 billion, with GDP per capita at RM44,300 in 2016 compared with RM44,100 in 2015.

He also outlined the current state of Sarawak economy, including major development projects in the State, transformation initiatives in major economic sectors and the digital economy initiative.

As the summit was attended by among others industry players, entrepreneurs and investors, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment in maintaining cooperation with the private sector through facilitation of private investments and business ventures.

Meanwhile, the one-day summit was organised by the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) as a platform to review the State Government’s strategic, complementary two-pronged direction, and provide up-to-date business and investment outlook to help industry captains, entrepreneurs and regulators reassess their future plans.

Themed ‘Digitising Sarawak, Amplifying Growth’, the summit covered key areas such as future outlook, tourism, infrastructure and construction, SCORE and energy, as well as human capital and entrepreneurship.
