Sarawak’s tourism industry is undergoing a remarkable digital evolution, marked by the introduction of the Sarawak Travel App and revamped digital strategies aimed at enhancing visitor engagement and promoting the state’s rich cultural and natural heritage. This shift is part of a larger initiative led by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts to position Sarawak as a smart tourism destination.
The most significant leap forward is the launch of the enhanced Sarawak Travel App and Portal, which offers immersive digital features including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). According to a report by DayakDaily, these features allow users to experience iconic attractions virtually before visiting, offering a fresh and engaging way to explore Sarawak’s biodiversity and culture. The upgraded platform not only aids in travel planning but also personalizes tourist experiences through location-based services, itinerary recommendations, and integrated booking systems.
As of its latest update, the app provides information on over 200 tourism products and services, with multilingual accessibility and a sleek, user-friendly interface. STB’s focus has been on improving content quality and accessibility for both domestic and international tourists. “We want people to explore Sarawak in a smarter way,” said STB Chief Executive Officer Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor, adding that the digital pivot aims to close the gap between modern expectations and traditional tourism offerings.
According to The Star, Sarawak recorded 1.97 million visitor arrivals in 2022, and this number is expected to rise significantly with improved digital outreach. The digital strategy complements physical tourism promotions such as the “Taste of Borneo” initiative and international exhibitions. In addition, STB has introduced a “Gateway to Borneo” campaign, targeting West Malaysian markets like Penang to attract more domestic travelers to Sarawak.

Minister Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah highlighted the importance of digital initiatives in improving operational efficiency and boosting tourism revenues. “Digitalisation is not just a tool; it is a necessity,” he said in an interview with Malay Mail. He further emphasized that adopting digital platforms is crucial for smaller operators, including homestay businesses, to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
One forward-thinking initiative includes the identification of traditional longhouses as digital homestay listings, allowing cultural tourism to reach new heights. This move aims to blend indigenous experiences with modern tech infrastructure, thus creating an inclusive tourism model that benefits rural communities.
Moreover, Sarawak’s emphasis on data-driven decision making has allowed tourism bodies to better understand traveler behaviors and fine-tune their strategies. The integration of smart analytics into the app enables real-time tracking of user preferences, offering invaluable insights for tourism stakeholders.

While digital transformation comes with challenges—such as connectivity in rural areas and digital literacy among older operators—the government and STB are actively conducting workshops and training sessions to bridge these gaps.
In the broader context, Sarawak’s embrace of digital tourism aligns with global tourism trends and reflects its ambition to lead by example in Southeast Asia. With strong political will, solid digital infrastructure, and community participation, the state is well on its way to becoming a vibrant, tech-driven tourism destination.
